Because “the guys” (as they were fondly called by the
family) were so busy by the time Brian joined the business, Keith,
the first non-family member, was hired. It would be ten years
before W. Pennings and Sons would begin hiring additional full
time crewmembers. It was also around this time that it became obvious
that W. Pennings and Sons needed office and storage space. An addition
was built onto Brian’s home to accommodate the needs of the
company. When the business outgrew this space in 1998, a separate
office and warehouse was built on West KL Avenue in Oshtemo.
Besides
the new homes, remodel work, and the occasional large commercial
project, the owners and employees of W. Pennings and
Sons have been active in various volunteer endeavors. Some of these
projects include Christian Reformed World Relief Committee projects
in Michigan & Louisiana, Hurricane Andrew relief in South Carolina,
Local Habitat for Humanity projects, Appalachia Reachout, and various
church building repairs.

It
wasn’t until 1996 that Wilbur attempted to go into partial
retirement. In spite of his formal retirement celebration, he
continued to work as much as he could until his death in 2000.
His family business was one of his greatest delights in life
and he was never quite as happy as when he was contributing to
this endeavor. His family is committed to carrying on the dream
as grandchildren join the business, propelling it into the future.
